Settlement details revealed in Kobe Bryant divorce

While the precise details of Kobe Bryant’s divorce settlement with soon-to-be ex-wife Vanessa Bryant have not been made public, sources report that Vanessa will be awarded $75 million, roughly half of the couple’s combined assets, which have been estimated at $150 million.

Sources say the deal, which basketball fans in Maryland and elsewhere have been following, has already been finalized, allowing Vanessa to take ownership of all three of the family’s expensive homes. Vanessa filed for divorce in December in 2011, leading some to speculate that rumors of Kobe engaging in extramarital affairs may have contributed to the decision. Kobe admitted to adultery in 2003 after being accused of sexual assault by a hotel employee.

A representative for the couple issued a prepared statement soon after news of the impending divorce broke. He explained that the couple had negotiated a resolution to all issues with the advice of attorneys. The couple reportedly did not sign a prenuptial agreement, which is likely why so much of the Bryant’s fortune will go to Vanessa. The state the couple resides in is a “community property” state, which means that couples married a certain length of time without a prenuptial agreement or some other agreement will have all assets equally divided. Maryland is not a community property state.

Sources close to Vanessa say she will seek joint custody of the couple’s 8- and 5-year-old daughters.

According to Forbes.com, Kobe Bryant current has the highest salary in the NBA at $25 million for the 2011-2012 season. He has earned an estimated $196 million during his career. Sports Illustrated estimates that he earns a minimum of $10 million from his numerous endorsements.
