Country singer and wife announce divorce plans

As news about Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow going their separate ways dominates the entertainment media, the recent story of another celebrity's marital issues may have gotten pushed to the back burner. However, fans of country music in Maryland may have heard news of the impending divorce of popular singer Trace Adkins and his wife. The couple have been married for over 16 years.

It's been a very difficult year for the 52-year-old singer. After a reported 12 years of sobriety, he entered a rehab facility in January, reportedly seeking treatment for alcohol issues. This followed media reports of a fight between the singer and another passenger on a cruise ship. According to an "ABC News" story in January, the singer was on a country music cruise when he got into a fight with an "impersonator" doing a karaoke version of one his tunes.

Adkins left the rehab facility the following month to spend time with his father. He then completed his treatment after the 71-year-old man passed away.

Adkins' wife reportedly cited "irreconcilable differences" in her divorce filing this week. She is seeking custody of the couple's three daughters as well as child support. The couple's spokesperson says that the two are "united in ensuring that their children's interests come first."

Although alcoholism can take a toll on a marriage, as can the death of a parent, the couple is not publicly discussing the reasons behind their split. The two have reportedly had problems "for some time" according to someone who did speak to the media.

While wealthy, famous people get far more attention (much of it generally unwanted) when they divorce, they face many of the same issues as most Maryland couples who split up. This is particularly true when there are children whose support and well-being must be considered. Experienced family law attorneys can work to protect the legal and financial rights of their clients and help them work to resolve any issues involving child custody and child support.
