Can Mandy Moore get spousal support for pet care?

On Behalf of | Dec 24, 2015 | Divorce |

Lots of Maryland residents are familiar with one or both spouses of a celebrity couple who are currently going through a divorce. Actress Mandy Moore and musician Ryan Adams married after a brief courtship and filed for divorce in early 2015. One of the primary issues in their divorce case is Moore’s assertion that Adams pay spousal support, which is intended for the care of the couple’s eight pets.

Adams earns an estimated $151,000 per month, while Moore is believed to bring in less than a quarter of that figure. Moore claims that she is unable to provide the necessary care for the couple’s six cats and two dogs. She is asking for $37,000 per month in spousal support. There is no report on what portion of that payment is intended for pet care expenses. However, Moore is also asking that Adams assume “custody” of four of the animals immediately.

Moore asserts that she is overwhelmed by the responsibility of caring for all eight pets on her own. She states that she has had to cancel work in order to care for the pets when no one else was available. There is no report on what the couple previously spent on pet care, or if they had outside help in caring for the animals within their household.

Many in Maryland might view this matter as frivolous, even ridiculous. However, it is important to remember that each and every divorce is different, and that the court approaches each case objectively. If Moore is able to provide a compelling legal argument that she should be granted spousal support to help cover her pet care costs, that outcome is not out of the realm of possibility.
