Don’t let child custody matters spoil your summer vacation

On Behalf of | May 24, 2018 | Child Custody |

Planning a summer vacation can be a lot of fun, especially if you’ll be traveling with your child or children.

Unfortunately, if you’re divorced, matters of child custody can get in the way. Here are some steps you can take to avoid trouble:

  • Talk to the other parent about your plans in advance: You shouldn’t spring your vacation plans on this person at the last minute, as it may upset him or her.
  • Stick with your schedule: Once you have a vacation schedule in place, don’t change too many details. For example, if you alter the dates, it could get in the way of something the other parent has planned for your child.
  • Review your child custody agreement: Before you do anything, review your agreement to make sure you’re not doing anything that will violate it. For example, if you’re not allowed to take your child out of the country, you shouldn’t attempt to do so.
  • Let your child stay in touch with their other parent during the trip: Telling your children that they aren’t allowed to contact their other parent can spoil an otherwise good time. Encourage them to keep an open line of communication, such as via text messages or regular phone calls.

If you have concerns about child custody matters spoiling your summer vacation, there are steps you can take to protect against trouble. When you plan in advance, understand your legal rights and are respectful of the other parent’s time, you should be able to plan a vacation that you and your children will always remember.
