Tips to avoid arguing while co-parenting

On Behalf of | Sep 7, 2018 | Child Custody |

If you don’t have any children with your ex-spouse, you never have to speak again after your divorce is final. However, if you have at least one child together, you’ll have to communicate every now and again.

This can result in additional arguments, which doesn’t make things any easier on you or your children.

Since you want to keep the peace to the best of your ability, here are a few tips to help you avoid arguing while co-parenting:

  • Find another way to communicate: If face-to-face communication is leading to too many arguments, use text messages or email to discuss your children.
  • Walk away: Rather than continue an argument, simply walk away and let it go. You don’t have to go down this path, as defending yourself is not going to make anything better.
  • Acknowledge the other person’s stance: There’s nothing wrong with putting yourself in the other person’s shoes, as this gives you a better overview of what they’re going through.
  • Agree to disagree: If both people get into the habit of doing this, most arguments will die off before they become something serious. It’s OK if you don’t reach an immediate resolution on every disagreement.

When co-parenting, there will be times when you argue with the other parent. There is no way around this, and in most cases, you hold firm because you think it’s what’s best for your child.

If the other parent continues to make life miserable for you, such as by violating a parenting agreement, you need to learn more about your legal rights and how to make things better in the near future.
