It seems that every week we read about another celebrity couple who couldn’t make their marriage work. Many may shrug off their breakups as something that was bound to happen, but celebrities who divorce face a similar separation process as many in Maryland.

In the latest bout of a long-running legal battle, Halle Berry has won custody of her 3-year old daughter. Berry and her ex-boyfriend Gabriel Aubry have been fighting for child custody of the girl since breaking up in 2010. Berry cited several witnesses in court who accused Aubry of verbally abusing and neglecting the child, allegations that Aubry has repeatedly denied.

The judge in the latest hearing denied Aubry’s request to have his current visitation arrangements modified. In accordance with a previous ruling, he is only allowed three hours of unsupervised contact with his daughter while the family is in Europe, during which he must take her to a public place like a park. A nanny is required to be present at any other time, even during overnight stays.

The court has upheld the custody decision despite Aubry’s protests. He claims that the presence of a nanny negatively affects his relationship with his daughter, saying that he is angered by the constant supervision.

While the divorces of most people in Maryland are not front-page news, that does not mean they do not share the same issues that we see so often in celebrity splits. Whether it’s about property division or child custody, many divorcing couples in Maryland can likely relate to celebrities’ experiences.
