Follow these tips when discussing divorce with your child

On Behalf of | Jan 4, 2017 | Divorce |

Are you going through the divorce process? Do you have at least one child with your soon to be ex spouse? If so, you need to take the right steps in regards to the way you speak with your child.

Here are some tips that will make your life much easier:

— Give thought to what you are about to say. The last thing you want to do is spit out information that doesn’t make sense. You must clearly convey your thoughts to the child, ensuring that he or she understands what you’re saying.

— Tell everyone. If you have more than one child, make sure you tell each and every one. You should never expect one child to tell the others what is going on.

— Don’t assume that your child will react in a particular way. Instead, you should be prepared for anything.

— Don’t let the divorce process drag on. This is easier said than done, but speeding up the process will work in the favor of you, your former spouse, and your children.

— Be supportive from beginning to end. Your child is sure to have questions along the way. Make sure you’re available to answer each one.

— Get on the same page as your spouse. There is nothing more important than the well being of your child. This is why you and your spouse, even if you’re divided on other matters, need to share the same message.

The approach you take to divorce will have a lot to say about the way your children are affected by the process. This is why you should learn more about the process, including everything it entails and how it will impact your family.
