2 problems that can result in divorce

On Behalf of | Oct 5, 2024 | Divorce |

In the beginning, marriages are usually full of excitement and optimism. While this doesn’t have to fade completely, couples generally have to navigate obstacles.

Minor disagreements can typically be resolved quite quickly. Everyone has bad days and that’s just part of life. However, some issues are more tricky for spouses to get over.

Here are two problems that can result in divorce.

Physical or non-physical abuse

Abuse of any type is never a minor issue. In fact, it can be a red line, meaning that a spouse has to leave the relationship to be safe. Abuse may comprise physical acts of violence such as hitting, kicking and shoving. However, any form of threatening and controlling behavior can constitute abuse.

Often, non-physical abuse is more subtle and prolonged. For example, an abusive spouse may make hurtful comments every day in an attempt to lower the self-esteem of their loved one. Or, they may take control of all debit and credit cards so that their spouse cannot go anywhere.

The empty nest

On the whole, divorce rates are actually declining, but there is one exception to this. Gray divorces are on the rise. There are several reasons for this, but empty nest syndrome is among the most common. This occurs when adult children leave the home. It may even happen when the grandkids have gained their independence in their teen years.

Here, a married couple can find their home and relationship feeling empty. They may no longer be compatible as two people.

Some issues are just too big to get over. Divorce is often the best option for couples who have irreconcilable differences. Seek legal guidance to ensure that you are protected.
