Divorce is never easy, but when one or both of the spouses is a public figure, even a local one, it can be even more painful. No one likes to see allegations of their personal indiscretions reported in the media, whether they are true or not. Although Maryland State Senator Richard Colburn’s website continues to include a happy picture of him with his wife, she has filed for divorce.
The mid-Shore area legislator’s attorney is working to keep the matter as private as possible, requesting that all documents in the case be sealed. She contends that the details of the divorce might prove “detrimental to his career.” She even noted the “potential for blackmail.” She also issued a statement on behalf of Colburn, who has been a state senator for 19 years, requesting privacy.
However, some details from the divorce papers filed by his wife of 14 years have already leaked out. She alleges that her husband had an affair with a young woman who once worked for him. He is 63, and the woman, who was an aide for Colburn in 2010 and 2011, is 26.
Every break-up is different, with unique challenges. It is essential to have a legal representative who will look after your best interests, whatever they may be. Often, they may be at odds with what your spouse believes is best for him or her. It appears that Colburn’s initial priority is to try to keep his divorce, and the accusations that are part of it, as far out of the public eye as possible.
