What’s the best way to ask your spouse for a divorce?

On Behalf of | Aug 18, 2017 | Divorce |

If you have come to the conclusion that there is no way to work through your marital problems, divorce may be the only answer. As disappointing as this may be, you need to take immediate action.

There are many things you can do to ease the tension when asking your spouse for a divorce. Here are some basic tips to keep in mind:

  • Choose the right time. It’s a must that you set aside time to discuss your relationship, as it never makes sense to bring this up when you are focused on something else.
  • Think about what you want to say. There is no easy way to discuss divorce, so you need to plan out your thoughts well in advance. This will make it easier for you to push the conversation forward.
  • Be kind. Even if you are angry with your spouse, this isn’t a time to show it. You need to be kind and calm, as this is the best way to get your point across and move the process forward. It never pays off to scream or get angry.
  • Think about your safety. Do you have reason to believe that your spouse could become violent if you ask for a divorce? If so, you should talk to the person over the phone or in a public place.

There is no right or wrong way to ask your spouse for a divorce, but these tips will help. Once you have this out of the way, you can learn more about the divorce process in Maryland and what’s expected of you.
