How to talk to your spouse about divorce

| Dec 15, 2016 | Divorce

Has the time come to speak with your spouse about divorce? If so, you may be nervous about what’s to come. After all, this is likely to be one of the most difficult conversations that you ever have.

While this is never easy, there are some steps you can take to get through the discussion without any added stress:

— Time it right. There are times when it makes sense to discuss divorce. There are also times when this is a bad idea, such as at a family dinner.

— Be clear. You don’t want to ask for a divorce, just to backtrack and change the way that you feel. If you’re going to discuss this with your spouse, be sure that you are 100 percent ready to do so.

— Remain calm. Even if the other person gets upset, you need to remain calm. This is not a time to start an argument. Instead, it’s a time to discuss your feelings in a rational manner.

— Be safe. If you have any reason to believe that your spouse could become upset and violent when discussing divorce, it’s best to do so in a public place or over the phone. Your safety should always come first.

When you do these things, you’ll find it much easier to talk to your spouse about divorce.

If you have this conversation and you’re still ready to move forward, learn more about the process and how to get started. This will help you put your relationship in the past as soon as possible, thus allowing you to move forward in a better place.
