What is a fixed visitation schedule?

On Behalf of | Aug 24, 2017 | Family Law |

In the event that divorce is on the horizon, you may find yourself discussing child custody with your soon-to-be ex-spouse. This is never an easy conversation to have, especially if you are no longer getting along.

If your case ends up in court, there is always a chance that the judge could implement a fixed visitation schedule. If you are the noncustodial parent and you find yourself in this position, you need to know exactly what it means.

A fixed visitation schedule is when a judge orders specific times (and oftentimes places) when you can visit your child.

An example of this would be Monday and Friday nights. While you may not agree with the decision upfront, it’s good to know that you at least have a designated time when you will be able to spend time with your child.

A fixed visitation schedule doesn’t always come into play. This is most common when parents are unwilling to work together to figure out a schedule or there is a major conflict causing additional trouble.

If you are unhappy with your fixed visitation schedule, you may need to request a modification from the court. There is no guarantee that the judge will change your schedule, but you can present your side of the story in hopes of things working out in your favor.

Although there is a lot to think about during divorce, your child should always come first. If you are put on a fixed visitation schedule, make sure you know exactly what this means and how it will impact your relationship with your child.
