What goals have you set for divorce mediation?

On Behalf of | Jan 24, 2018 | Family Law |

As someone facing the divorce process, you need to decide which steps to take next. For example, you may come to learn that mediation is the best situation for you and your soon to be ex-spouse.

There are many benefits of divorce mediation, including the ability to avoid the time and costs associated with litigation related to a contentious divorce.

As you consider this idea, you need to focus on one thing, which is your goals. In other words, what do you want to accomplish through divorce mediation?

While no two people are the same, there are certain goals that are common to couples going through the process.

  • Trying to minimize bad feelings between you and the other party, especially if you are going to be co-parenting in the future
  • Avoiding the expense and delay associated with litigated divorces
  • Creating an equitable agreement regarding custody and asset division that both individuals can live with
  • Putting the divorce in the past as quickly as possible

Some people are able to work through all their issues in a session or two. Others, however, spend more time in mediation to get through everything. As long as you are patient and understand that mediation takes time, you should be able to reach your goals in the end.

The goals that you set for divorce mediation will have a lot to do with the way you move forward. It’s imperative that you have a clear idea of what you want to accomplish to ensure that you don’t get off track.

When you combine a list of goals with knowledge of your legal rights, everything will slowly begin to fall into its rightful place.
