Top questions children ask about divorce

On Behalf of | Jun 7, 2018 | Divorce |

There are many challenges associated with the divorce process, including the conversation you’ll have with your children.

It’s never easy to tell a child about your divorce, as you don’t know how he or she will react. Furthermore, you’re sure to have several questions thrown your way, some of which can be difficult to answer.

Here are the top questions children ask about divorce:

  • Why is this happening? This is a tough one, as you may not be completely clear as to where things stand and what went wrong.
  • Where is everyone going to live? Depending on their age, some children understand that divorce means that their parents will no longer live together.
  • Will you and mommy (or daddy) get back together in the future? Children want to hold out hope that things will return to “normal” once again down the road.
  • What will happen to me? Children want to know how divorce will affect their life, such as where they will live and how they’ll spend time with both parents.
  • What happens next? Children are curious by nature, so they’ll want to know what the timeline of the divorce looks like.

These aren’t the only questions a child may ask about the divorce process, but they are definitely among the most common.

As a parent discussing divorce with a child, you need to be prepared for these types of questions, among many others.

Once you are on the same page as your child or children, you can turn your attention to the divorce process and how to protect your legal rights along the way.
